Watertown Square bus stop removal frustrates travelers

WATERTOWN – Some are saying the removal of a bus stop on Main Street has caused trouble for the elderly and the disabled.

Natalie Lopez, a Watertown resident who is legally blind, said she uses the bus often but notes that the winter months are the toughest to travel in.

“There is no reason why the bus stop should not be there,” she said about the original stop in front of the bank. “We are supposed to help the handicapped, not hinder them.”

In 2003, an ambitious overhaul was done to Watertown Square, including sidewalk improvements, landscaping and some traffic changes. But with the improvements came an adjustment to Main Street’s bus stops – taking away one stop near Store 24 and another from the corner of the Watertown Savings Bank and combining them into a stop down the block next to Jack’s Smoke Shop and Cross Street where Bus 70 drops off and picks up on the way down Arsenal Street [more…].
